Abstract

Objectives: The treatment of neglected or untreated high dislocation of the hip is quite difficult in adults. The hip is irreducible in these patients due to inherent problems related to age. Apart from arthroplastic procedures, hip reconstruction osteotomy is one of the alternative therapeutic procedures. We evaluated early results of a group of patients who underwent Ilizarov's hip reconstruction osteotomy for high dislocation of the hip. Methods: Fourteen patients (mean age 20.3 years, range 12-33 years) with high dislocation of the hip were treated by Ilizarov's hip reconstruction osteotomy. Mean follow-up was 58.3 months (range 48-72 months). Clinical symptoms, findings, and radiologic measurements obtained both preoperatively and postoperatively were compared. Results: Pain resolved in all patients. The Trendelenburg sign was completely improved in all patients, but three. Limb length discrepancy did not occur and alignment of the affected extremity was reestablished. However, three patients still had lurching. Conclusion: We concluded that Ilizarov's hip reconstruction osteotomy is an effective alternative treatment modality in patients with high dislocation of the hip.
