Abstract

Klebsiella pneumoniae is an opportunist pathogen that frequently causes nosocomial infections, mainly in immunocompromised patients. Pulmonary infections due to K. pneumoniae are often characterized by a rapidly progressive clinical course. The early confirmation of diagnosis would increase the success rate in treatment. We report A 3-year-old male who was admitted to the hospital with a history of fever, cough and respiratory distress. On the third day of admission, bronchoscopy procedure was negative for a foreign body. The bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was also cultured and K. pneumoniae was grown. The patient was treated with seftriacson at a dose of 75 mg/kg/day. He was clinically normal ten days later. He was discharged and followed up for one month during which time he was asymptomatic. The cavity lesion in the upper lobe of the right lung resolved completely. In conclusion, we suggest that K. pneumoniae should be considered as a rare cause of pneumonia.
