Abstract

Achieving a sustainable economic growth is the main economic goal of both developed and developing countries. Development of the financial system plays an important role at the achievement of this goal. Financial development is defined as the size of the financial system and the change in financial structure. Also financial development enables them to increase savings and turn into investments. In the examination of financial development, changes in the financial structure in the short and long-term process come to the fore. Financial instruments, financial institutions and the increase in their diversity gain importance as components of the financial structure. In the literature, two approaches have been put forward for the causality relationship between two variables. The first of these is that as the real economy develops, the demand for new financial services will increase. The other approach argues that the development of the financial sector will stimulate economic growth. In this paper, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between financial development and economic growth for ten developing countries (Turkey, Thailand, Poland, Romania, Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia, Chile, Brazil, Argentina) which are considered to be economically similar for the period of 2010-2018. Empirical analysis was carried out using the FGLS method. The following six variables, which are thought to represent financial development were used in the study: Domestic credit to private sector by banks, Broad Money, Domestic credit to private sector, General government final consumption expenditure, Inflation, consumer prices, Gross fixed capital formation. Annual percentage growth in per capita gross domestic product representing economic growth was used as the dependent variable. As a result of the analysis, it was seen that independent variables other than the final consumption expenditures of the government have high level of significance. Broad Money, Domestic credit to private sector, Inflation variables were found to have negative effect on economic growth whereas Domestic credit to private sector by banks, General government final consumption expenditure and Gross fixed capital formation variables were found to have positive effect on dependent variable.
