Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study is to represent the demographic features and laboratory findings of elderly patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and evaluate the factors associated with mortality. Material and Method: This study includes the patients who were hospitalized with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 in a training and research hospital between 13 March 2020 and 10 May 2020. Clinical features, İzmir Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi Tıp Dergisi (Medical Journal of İzmir Hospital) 25 (2): 115-121, 2021 116 İzmir Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi Tıp Dergisi (Medical Journal of İzmir Hospital) laboratory parameters, chest CT findings, antiviral therapy, requirement of mechanical ventilation and survival status were collected. In the analysis of the data, categorical variables were defined as ratios and percentages. Continuous variables were defined by mean, median values. Forward stepwise logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze the factors associated with the survival status of elderly patients. Results:The mean age was 55.7419.15 (18-96 years) and 67 of all patients (% 41.9) were aged 60 and over. Chronic diseases such as hypertension, congestive heart failure, diabetes mellitus, COPD, cerebrovascular disease and dementia was common in elderly group, compared with patients under age of 60. (all p<0.05). When it comes to mortality, underage of 60, 5 of them (%5.4) died, while 20 (%29.9) patients died in the 60 and over group. Ferritin was found to be the most important factor associated with mortality in elderly patients (p:0.000). Conclusion: Ferritin is a significant risk factor associated with mortality in patients aged 60 and over, and diagnosed with COVID-19 and may be helpful for the followup of patients in this group of age.
