Abstract

This study investigated the capacity of school climate, pro-social behaviors (selfish or altruism) basic needs and gender to predict the possibility of a student to fall in one of the bullying status (bully or victim). Participants were composed of 456 students who attended 6th, 7th and 8th grades of primary schools in Ankara Province in 2007 – 2008 education years. Data was analyzed by using binary logistic regression analysis. Predictive variables of the study were determined as gender, school climate, basic needs and pro-social behaviors (selfish or altruism) and the result or predicted variable as bullying status (bully or victim). The results of the analysis showed that all variables except for the basic needs predict the bullying behaviors at a meaningful level. In other words, “a positive school climate”, “being a male” and “providing altruism” are the three factors that decrease the possibility of a student to be classified as a bully.
