Abstract

Objectives: In order to determine the anatomic variations and mucosal changes that predispose to sinusitis, we studied the paranasal sinus computed tomography scans of patients who under-went functional endoscopic sinus surgery during a two-year period. Patients and Methods: The study included 112 patients (76 males, 36 females; mean age 38 years; range 18-70 years) who underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic or recurrent sinusitis, or nasal polyposis. Preoperative paranasal CT sans were examined and anatomic variations and paranasal mucosal changes were evaluated. Results: Anatomic variations were detected in 77 patients (68.7%). Sixty-five patients (84.47%) exhibited more than one anatomic variation. The most frequent variation was concha bullosa encountered in 32 patients (41.5%). Mucosal abnormalites were detected in 106 patients (94.6%). Conclusion: Detection of anatomic variations using preoperative CT scans may be helpful in planning surgical treatment.
