Abstract

Objectives: We evaluated the clinical results of treat-ment in patients with benign paroxysmal positional verti-go (BPPV) of posterior semicircular canal involvement. Patients and Methods: The study included 102 patients (72 females, 30 males; mean age 50.5 years; range 15 to 85 years) with BPPV. Dix-Hallpike test was performed in all the patients. Patients with typical nystagmus were treated with the canalith repositioning maneuver (CRM), a modified form of the Epley's maneuver. Follow-up examinations were performed at three-day intervals, until a negative result was obtained by the Dix-Hallpike test. Results: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo was detected in the right ear in 63 patients and in the left ear in 33 patients. Six patients had bilateral involvement. Following CRM, symptoms disappeared after one ses-sion in 69 patients (67.6%), after two sessions in 23 patients (22.5%), after three sessions in six patients (5.9%), and after four sessions in two patients (2%). Recurrence was detected in five patients within six months of treatment, all of whom responded to one session of CRM. Two patients who were lost to follow-up were regarded as the only failures (2%). Conclusion: With a success rate of 98%, CRM proved to be very effective in BPPV.

Altı hastada her iki kulakta tutulum vardı.
