Abstract

Objectives: To determine the etiologic causes and extent of hearing loss in students of Mersin School for the Deaf. Subjects and Methods: The study included 154 stu-dents (87 males, 57 females; mean age 12 years; range 7 to 20 years). Histories were obtained and ENT examinations and pure-tone hearing tests were performed. Results: Heredity (36%), meningitis (13%), and febrile diseases (11%) were the most common causes in the etiology of hearing loss. Parental consan-guinity was 50%, being statistically higher than the average in Turkey (p=0.000). Profound hearing loss was documented in 85% of the students. Conclusion: Hereditary factors and infectious diseases play an important role in the etiology of hear-ing loss. in order to reduce the number of deaf chil-dren, consanguinity should be prevented and prima-ry health measures should be taken.
