Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the hemogram parameters of patients diagnosed with retinal vein occlusion. Material and Method: The patients were reviewed retrospectively. Forty-three patients and 47 control subjects were enrolled. Leukocyteto-lymphocte ratio, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio values were compared between groups. Results: Neutrophil, lymphocyte and leukocyte counts of both groups were similar (respectively, p=0.16,mp=0.88, p=0.86). The mean leukocyte-to-lymphocte ratio, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio was significantly higher in the retinal vein occlusion group compared with the control group (respectively p=0,03, p=0,03, p=0,02). Platelet count was significantly higher in the retinal vein occlusion group compared with the control group (p=0,01). Mean platelet volume was significantly less than in the retinal vein occlusion group compared with the control group (p=0,01). In receiving operating characteristics analysis, the area under the curve for leukocyte to lymphocyte ratio was 0.65, predicted retinal vein occlusion with a sensitivity of 81% and specificity of 60%. Area under the curve for neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio was 0.65, predicted retinal vein occlusion with a sensitivity of 76% and specificity of 51%. Area under the curve for platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio was 0.55, predicted retinal vein occlusion with a sensitivity of 72% and specificity of 59%. Conclusion: Current study demonstrated that retinal vein occlusion patients had increased leukocyte-to-lymphocte ratio, neutrophil-tolymphocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio levels compared with control subjects. Leukocyte-to-lymphocte ratio, neutrophil-tolymphocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio may be used as independent predictors for identifying risk for the development of retinal vein occlusion.
