Abstract

Transurethral Electrovaporisation Versus Transurethral Resection Of The Prostate In Surgical Treatment Of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia-In this study, 19 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia treated by transurethral electrovaporisation of the prostate were evaluated in terms of efficacy and complications, and tissue specimens for histopathological examination were compared to those obtained in 20 patients who underwent standard transurethral resections and served as controls. The amount of blood loss as determined by measuring pre- and postoperative hematocrite values was found to be significantly loiver in 19 patients who underwent transurethral vaporisation. Although the operating time was longer in the electrovaporisation group, time to catheter removal was shorter than that in the transurethral resection group. The groups were similar with regard to postoperative decrease in symptom scores and residual urine volumes. Tissue samples obtained with transurethral electrovaporisation had rather less cautery artifacts that might be an advantage for histopathological examination. Transurethral electrovaporisation appears as an effective and reliable method of treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia with less bleeding, shorter time to catheter removal and shorter hospital stay.
