Abstract

Doxazosin in the Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia in Normortensive Patients-The efficacy and safety of doxazosin, a selective alpha-1 adrenoceptor antagonist, in the treatment of bladder outlet obstruction due to benign prostatic hpyperplas.ia were evaluated. Fifty normotensive patients with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia were treated for 3 months with either doxazosin (30 patients) or placebo (20 patients) after baseline evaluation. Urinary flow rates, symptoms and adverse reactions were assessed at the end of the treatment. Doxazosin produced increases in both maximum and average flow rates of 2.4 ml/s and 1.4 ml/s, respectively. The corresponding values in the placebo group were 0.5 ml/s decrease and 0.2 ml/s increase, respectively. Doxazosin when compared to placebo, significantly decreased patient-assessed total, obstructive and irritative benign prostatic hyperplasia symptoms. Adverse events that remained mild in severity, were reported in 36.6 % of patients on doxazosin and in 20 % of those on placebo. Our results suggest that doxazosin is an effective and well tolerated medical treatment for normotensive patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
