Abstract

Comparison Between Needle Biopsy And Radical Prostatectomy Grades In Prostatic Carcinoma-Objective: To investigate a probable discrepancy between Gleason scores of needle biopsy and radical prostatectomy specimens. Patients and Methods: Gleason scores of needle biopsy and radical prostatectomy specimens were compared in 40 patients operated between 1993 and 1997 for prostatic adenocarcinoma. Results: Overall consideration of patients revealed that 30 (75 %) patients had higher Gleason scores after radical prostatectomy than those reported in biopsy materials. The difference between biopsy and radical prostatectomy Gleason scores was statistically significant (p< 0.05). When Gleason scores were grouped as 2-4, 5-6 and 7-10 undergrading in biopsy specimens were noted in 25 (62.5 %) patients. There was no significant relation between the degree of differentiation and discrepancy between biopsy and prostatectomy Gleason scores (p> 0.05). Also no correlation was found between pathological stage and undergrading (p> 0.05). Conclusion: Undergrading in diagnostic biopsies for prostatic carcinoma has been determined in 75 % of patients. This should be considered in planning the treatment.
