Abstract

Objective: Urinary incontinence is a serious problem that can effect both sexual life and social life and may even cause divorces. In this study we’ve investigated the stress-type urinary incontinence and its effects on sexual functions, social life and quality of life. Materials and methods: Sexually active 78 female patients were included in this study who were suffered from urinary incontinence and were admitted to our clinic between June 2009 and August 2009. In order to asses these patients regarding incontinence we used surveys such as prolapsus of pelvic organ/ urinary incontinence assessing of sexual function (PISQ-12), incontinence impact questionnaire (IIQ-7), urogenital distress inventory (UDI-6) and incontinence quality of life questionnaire (I-QOL). Each participants completed questionnaires in cooperation with an urologist. Results: Mean age of participants were 55,87 ± 10,64 years (range 24–76). The portion of patients over 51 were 70%. We assessed mean total point of PISQ-12 questionnaire was 23,70±11,14. Mean total point of I-QOL questionnaire was 73,87±18,84. We compared both age and mean I-QOL domain points and found that avoidance and limiting behavior points and psychosocial impacts points were (27,18±1,3) , (30,68±1,98) respectively in over 51 years old . This results were significantly above from 50 years old and below whose points were 26,64±1,91;26,91±3,10. We found that the destructive effect of stress-type incotinance on quality of life and sexual function were significantly higher in elderly patients. Conclusion: Urinary incontinence is a serious health problem which causes deterioration of sexual functions and quality of life in women. Urinary incontinence should be handled as a serious health problem regardless of age and must be treated with effective and proper techniques.
