Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of mediolateral episiotomy on postpartum maternal hemorrhage. Method: A prospective study was conducted from June 2001 to June 2002 at Zeynep Kamil Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital. The study was started with 205 cases. Seven cases were excluded because of varied complications. 198 vaginal deliveries were divided into 2 subgroups: the former was composed by patients submitted to episiotomy (n=132) and the latter by patients not submitted to this procedure (n=66). Hemoglobin and hematocrit levels in all groups were assessed in before delivery and 48 hours after vaginal deliveries. Results: Mean hemoglobin values in episiotomy group were 11,6±1,3 gr/dl in before delivery and 10,5±1,4 gr/dl after delivery, and in non-episiotomy group 11,3±1,3 gr/dl and 10,3+1,4 gr/dl, respectively. Mean hematocrit values in episiotomy group were 35,2 % ±3,9 be/ore delivery and 31,8 % ± 4,0 after delivery, and in non-episiotomy group 34,3% ±3,9 and 31,6%±4,1 respectively, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups. Conclusion: Routine use of episiotomy in obstetrics has been debatable because of serious complications. Although the number of cases was low, our findings showed that mediolateral episiotomy did not enhance postpartum maternal hemorrhage.
