Abstract

Objective: Through this study, we aimed to review some of obstetric risk factors based on especially sociocultural and socioeconomical status that causes low birthweight (LBW)from the pediatrician's point of view. Material and methods: 5000 live born babies were evaluated prospectively between October 2000-May 2001 in our hospital. Infants with birthweight below 2500g defined as LBW infant and they formed the study group. They were compared with the same number of normal birthweight (2500g) infants forming the control group. Maternal factors that have effects on birthweight, maternal weight gain before birth, antenatal care were noted. Multiple gestations were excluded from the study. Results: The rate of LBW infants was found to be 8.43%. Following maternal risk factors for LBW were identified: poor weight gain (
