Abstract

Background: We aimed to determine the Neisseria meningitidis carriage in throat cultures taken from the primary school children and to obtain data in serogroup distribution in 2005. Materials and Methods: Throat samples were taken from 340 children, between the ages 6 to 10. N. meningitidis identified using conventional methods and serogrouped according to capsule polysaccharides. The N. meningitidis strains investigated for MIC values of penicillin G by E test method. Results: In this study, 24 N. meningitidis strains were isolated from the children consisting of 14 female and 10 male. The carriage in 340 throat samples was found as 7%. 9 out of the 16 serogrouped strains were Y/W135, 3 were serogroup A, 3 were serogroup B and 1 was serogroup C. It was also found that carriage increased in 6 years old children and the ones with 5 or more siblings. Strains which determined intermediate to Penicillin G were 5 (two serogroup A, one serogroup Y/W135 and two not serogrouped) and 19 strains were susceptible. Conclusion: The most important bacterium in throat is N. meningitidis, due to its life-threatining outbreaks. When the incidence ofN. meningitidis on throat without any symptom increases, the possibility of an epidemic will augment.

6th ISAAR (International Symposium on Antimicrobial agents and Resistance, 2007) sempozyumunda poster olarak sunulmuştur.
