Abstract

Objective: The aim of this descriptive study was to determine the fears, expectations and experiences of birth in pregnant women during intrapartum period. Material and Method: The study was performed through face to face interviews in a delivery room of a state of hospital in Istanbul. The sample of the study consisted of 100pregnant women who applied to the delivery room of the hospital for giving birth in the third trimester. A Participant information form (20 questions) and "Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire (W-DEQ A) (33 items)" were used for data collection. Results: The mean age of the women were 27,87±-6,42 years, 92% were housewife. 30% of women were primiparous. Average number of antenatal care received from a health center at the present pregnancy was 7,64±2,99 times. 70% women had spontaneous vaginal birth. 58% of women did not receive any help for the pain relief during labor. The mean W-DEQ A score of women was 85,63±13,76. No statistically significant difference was found in W-DEQ A scores in relation to the age of the women, education status, parity and using a method to cope with the labor pain. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that, the intrapartum fears and expectations were similarly high in women who were mostly multiparous, primary school graduates and housewives. Although the numbers of antenatal care were higher than the recommendations of WHO, women were not prepared for the birth good enough. More than half of the women who experienced fears during birth were not offered any help for coping with the labor pain. According to the goals of "Safe motherhood" for healthy mothers and babies, midwives and nurses have important responsibilities in providing adequate and qualified care during prenatal, intrapartum andpostpartum periods as well as all health care professionals.
