Abstract

Aim: In this study, we evaluated retrospectively 95 cases of posterior fossa tumors operated within 50 months between January 1996 and February 2000 in Neurosurgery Clinic of Ankara Numune Education and Research Hospital. Methods: Patients were diagnosed with cranial Computed Tomography (CT). All of the patients diagnosed with posterior fossa tumors underwent surgery of tumor excision and materials were histopathologicaly evaluated. Results: Forty~twq (44%) of the patients were in pediatric ages (under 18 years) and 51 (56%) were adults. The most frequent complaint was headache in 90% of patients followed by vomiting (70%) and nausea (60%). The most frequent neurological manifestation was papilla stasis (80%). Medulloblastoma was the most common histopatholpgic diagnosis in childhood patients and was the most common in all ages. Conclusion: Early surgery is life-saving in treatment of posterior fossa tumors. Postoperative close follow up is required in order to decrerase mortality and morbidity. Moreover, radiotherapy and chemotherapy contribute to lenghtening of survival of the patients.
