Eğitim, ülkelerin olumlu anlamda her türlü ilerlemesinin temelini oluşturan en önemli öğelerden birisidir. Eğitim kalitesinin arttırılmasında önemli bir yeri olan Akreditasyon; özellikle eğitim ve öğretim kurumlarında uygulanması gereken bir sistemdir. Akreditasyon; denk olma durumu anlamına gelir. 2008 yılında kurulan Ulusal Tıp Eğitimi Akreditasyon Kurulu (UTEAK); amaç ve hedeflerini, toplumun sağlık düzeyinin yükseltilmesi için tıp fakültesinde verilen tıp eğitim ve öğretiminin geliştirilmesi ve niteliğinin iyileştirilmesi, kurumlara yol göstermek, gelişimlerini desteklemek, işleyiş ve sürekliliğini izlemek olarak tanımlamıştır. Bu amaç ve hedeflerin karşılanmasında değerlendirme aracı akreditasyon süreci olarak adlandırılmıştır. Akreditasyon için en önemli aracın ise ulusal standartlar olduğu belirtilmiştir. Halen ülkemizde 22 tıp fakültesi akredite durumdadır.
