Abstract

Aim: Pleomorphic adenoma is a slow-growing benign salivary tumour most commonly arising in the parotid gland. The etiology of this tumor is unknown but is associated with malignant degeneration, thus constitutes one of the indications for surgery. Optimal surgical management of parotid pleomorphic adenoma is important because of a considerable risk of tumour recurrence and complications. The current and most common practice is the excision of these tumours by means of superficial parotidectomy and postoperative follow-up. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 11 patients with parotid pleomorphic adenomas diagnosed and operated on by ENT surgeons were performed in the study. Clinical presentation, preoperative investigations, operative procedure, histopathology report, postoperative complications were recorded. The data were collected and reviewed from the records of all the patients. Results: In our study we had 11 patients (9 females, 2 males, age range 13-51, mean age of 33.3,± 13.4). In all cases the tumors were located in the superficial lobe of the parotid gland and fine needle aspiration biopsy was suggested of pleomorphic parotid adenoma. The right side was affected in seven (63.6%), while the left in four patients (36.4%). The average follow-up was 1.2 years. We had no permanent facial nerve dysfunction, and no recurrence. Conclusion: Adequate excision of the tumour with intact capsule by superficial parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation for pleomorphic adenomas located in the superficial lobe of the parotid gland provides adequate therapy and generally avoids recurrence.
