Abstract

We present two children with subacute scleroslng panencephalitis (SSPE) displaying atypical clinical course because of unusual presentation. A 7-year-old girl was admitted with speech disorder and abnormal gait, which were first noted seven days before admission to our hospital. On the 3rd day of admission, her aphasia and atoxic gait disappeared spontaneously and her clinical and neurological examination showed normal findings. However, myoclonic jerks developed on the 14th day of admission. Serum and cerebrospinal fluid IgG antibodies to measles virus were found to be positive. She was diagnosed with SSPE and specific therapy was initiated. Now she is 9th month of follow-up and in stage HI of SSPE. The second case was 3-year-old boy and admitted with a state unable to walk and speak, which was first noted about 1 month before admission to our hospital. He was also diagnosedwith SSPE because of positive IgG antibodies to measles virus and given specific therapy. However, he died at the sixth mouth of his follow-up.
