Abstract

Background: Congenital hearing loss is a common congenital anomaly. If it left undiagnosed, language development, psychosocial development, the ability to adapt to one’s surroundings and delayed communication are to be expected. These negative effects of hearing loss can be minimized if early diagnosis and treatment and rehabilitation programs are provided. Objective: To share the results of a four year neonatal hearing screening program and to discuss the findings in light of the latest literature. Materials and methods: 2518 normal infants born at Sema Hospital between January of 2006 and May of 2010 were included in the study. Otoacustic emissions (OAE) were used to measure health of infants at 4-5 weeks post-natal. Infants that did not pass the OAE screening were given an Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) screening. Infants identified as having hearing loss were referred to in a tertiary hospital and risk factors were investigated Results: 2515 (99.8%) of the infants included in the study had normal screening results. Two infants (0.08%) had bilateral and one infant (0.04%) had unilateral hearing loss. None of the infants with hearing loss were positive for risk factors. Conclusion: As can be found in many centers in our country, hearing tests for newborns at our hospital have become routine. Insisting on the screening of neonatal is critical to nationwide successful identification of real incidence rates and early diagnosis and treatment.
