Abstract

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common cause of congenital viral infections. While 90% of all infants with congenital CMV are asymptomatic, 10% of them are symptomatic. The most important sequelae is sensorineural hearing loss in asymptomatic congenital CMV. Anti-viral agents are not routinely recommended. However, the patients should be followed-up with brainstem auditory evoked response concerning the risk of hearing loss. Here, we presented a premature newborn with congenital asymptomatic CMV infection, and had no clinical or hematological finding except microcephaly. As the presented patient, premature and microcephalic newborns should be investigated for congenital CMV, and evaluated for anti-viral treatment and followed- up for sequelas.
