Abstract

Aim: We aimed to investigate the relationship between chronic prostatitis and prostate spesific antigen in patients who underwent prostate biopsies because of elevated levels of serum prostate specific antigen (PSA). Materials and Methods: Between December 2011 and May 2014, records of patients who underwent prostate biopsy because of elevated PSA levels were retrospectively analyzed and 268 patients were included in the study. Prostate cancer patients who previously underwent transurethral interventions or surgical history were excluded from the study. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to histopathological examination: group 1:Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and group 2:BPH+chronic prostatitis. 185(69%) patients constituted the first group, while 83(31%) patients the second group. The relationship between serum total PSA, free PSA, free/total PSA, age, prostate volume and PSA density was investigated. Results: Of the patients in this study, the mean values of age, total PSA, free PSA, and prostatic volume were 65.17±7.99 years, 10.98±11.23 ng/ml, 2.25±2.35 ng/ml, 60.29±31.6 cc respectively. Both groups were similar in age, prostate volumes, free PSA and free/total PSA ratio. However, total PSA values and PSA density were significantly higher in chronic prostatitis group (p=0.016, p=0.007). Conclusion: Although benign prostatic biopsy, PSA elevation still continues in patients with normal digital rectal examination, chronic prostatitis focus should be kept in mind in pathological diagnosis of the prostate.
