Abstract

In cats, intravenous excretory urography has been used for a long period of time for indirect examination of urinary tract. However, it can not be used when intravenous injection is not possible. In this study, therefore, applicability of intraosseous excretory urography technique using iopamidol, a non-ionic, moderately hiperosmolar contrast medium, was investigated as an alternative technique to intravenous excretory urography in cats. In this study, a total of 24 cats in different age, sex and species were used. In the cats, for the administration of the intraosseous contrast medium, medulla of left tibia were used. Injections were performed under the general anesthesia by using a spinal needle. These cats were divided into four equal groups (6 in each). After the intraosseous injection of different doses of iopamidol to each group (200 mg I/kg, 400 mg I/kg, 600 mg I/kg, 800 mg I/kg) the opacities of kidneys, urethers and urinary bladder were evaluated. For the evaluation of the opacity, x-rays were taken on 0, 3, 10, 30 and 60th min. on V/D and L/L positions. There was no sufficient opacity on x-ray at cats injected 200 mg I/kg and 400 mg I/kg for the detailed examination of the urinary tract. The opacity of x-ray of cats injected with 600 mg I/kg and 800 mgl/kg iopamidol were similar but 800 mgl/kg of iopamidol was found to produce more reliable results than 600 mg I/kg iopamidol for the examination of the urinary tract. In conclusion, in cats, intraosseous excretory urography was found to be reliable alternative technique to intravenous excretory urography for the examination of urinary tract. It can be applied safely by using, a non-ionic contrast medium, iopamidol at a dose of 800 mg/kg for the diagnosis of urinary tract diseases in cats.

Özet

Kedilerde üriner sistemin indirekt radyografisi amacıyla uzun yıllardan beri uygulanan, ancak çeşitli durumlarda uygulama olanağı ortadan kalkan intravenöz ekskretör ürografı tekniğine alternatif olarak, ılımlı hiperozmolar non-iyonik bir kontrast madde olan iopamidol ile intraosseal ekskretör ürografı tekniğinin uygulanabilirliği araştırıldı. Çalışma materyalini değişik ırk, cinsiyet ve yaşta toplam 24 kedi oluşturdu. İntraosseal kontrast madde verilişi için tüm kedilerde sol tibianın medullar boşluğu kullanıldı ve enjeksiyonlar genel anestezi eşliğinde spinal bir iğneyle gerçekleştirildi. Her grupta 6 kedi olmak üzere 4 gruba ayrılan hayvanlara iopamidol'ün farklı dozlarının (200 mg I/kg, 400 mg I/kg, 600 mg I/kg 800 mg I/kg) intraosseal olarak uygulanmasından sonra böbrek, üreter ve mesane opasifikasyonları değerlendirildi.
