Abstract

Sex differentiation in mammals is a process consists of many stages following each other. Sex development starts at embryonic stage, continues through fetal development and in some species progresses until early neonatal period. This process is controlled by two critical mechanisms. The first one is genetic control mechanism governed by a gene on Y chromosome called SRY (Sex determining Region on chromosome Y) that decides whether embryonic gonads will develop as testes or ovaries. The second one is hormonal control mechanisms that designate the sexual differentiation of the genital tract and brain. Testosterone and MIF (Müllerian Inhibiting Substance) are the two key hormones produced by fetal testis. Researches showed surprisingly sex differentiation depends on presence or absence of testis hormones in both male and female and there isn’t any effect of ovarian hormones in the determination stage even in female. In this review, effect of control mechanisms on sexual differentiation and the pathophysilogies due to deficiencies or defects of these mechanisms are presented.
