Abstract

The use of adhesive joints as a method of connection is increasing due to the significant advantages it provides in many engineering fields. In this study, the effect of the variation of lap length, pipe wall thickness and adhesive thickness on the stress distribution in the adhesive layer was numerically investigated. As a result, it has been shown that overlap length, pipe wall thickness and adhesive thickness are very important design parameters in pipe bonding joints. With the increase of lap length from 10 mm to 20 mm, the maximum equivalent stress value in the adhesive layer lap ends decreased by 25%. However, when the overlap length increased from 20 mm to 30 mm and from 30 mm to 40 mm, the reduction was 4% and 0.6%, respectively. As the pipe wall thickness increased from 0.5 mm to 1 mm, the maximum equivalent stress value in the adhesive layer lap ends decreased by 18.8%. On the other hand, the stresses around the A and B points were close to each other at 1, 1.5 and 2 mm pipe wall thickness. With the increase in adhesive thickness, the stresses on the adhesive layer lap ends decreased. However, the maximum τyz shear stress and maximum equivalent stress values in the adhesive layer occurred approximately 1 mm inside the lap ends.
