Abstract

The diagnosis of acute appendicitis may be difficult to establish based on history, physicalfmdings and supplementary laboratory values. it is reported that ultrasonography is a useful tool in the diagnosis ofsuspected appendicitis. This study was designed to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity ofabdominal ultrasonography for acute appendicitis. Fromjune 1995 to November 1997, 52 patients who had possible appendicitis was evaluated. The ultrasonographic study showed 34 acute appendicitis. There was nofalse positive but öne, false negative. Tlıe sensitivity was %97.1, the specificity was %100,the positive predictive value was %100, the negative predictive value was %94.5 and the diagnostic accuracy was %98.1. Clinically suspected appendicitis can be confirmed ör excluded by ultrasonographic examination and if there is no evidence of acute appendicitis, ultrasonography can often established altemative diagnosis. Consequently, it may be decreased negative laparotomy and complication ofdelayed diagnosis.
