Abstract

Bruxism is thought to be associated with many sleep disorders. However, there is little information about sleep quality in patients with bruxism. The aim of this study was to investigate sleep quality in patients with sleep and awake bruxism. The study was conducted with 585 dental faculty students, 351 of whom (60%) were women and 234 (40%) men, aged between 18 and 35 years. For the diagnosis of sleep bruxism, the criteria of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) were used. The presence of awake bruxism was determined by questioning the awareness of oothgrinding in the last 1 month. While determining the sleep quality and the day time sleepiness of the students, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and EPWORTH sleepiness scale (ESS) was used, respectively Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 22 software (IBM SPSS, Turkey). Data were analyzed using chi-square test and Mann Whitney U. The significance level was set at p≤0.05. According to the chi-square test, there was no significant difference in sleep quality between students with and without sleep bruxism and awake bruxism. The prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness (46.4%) was found to be significantly higher in the students with sleep bruxism than in those without sleep bruxism (37.2%) (p: 0.027; p <0.05). While there was no difference in sleep quality between the patients with bruxism and those who were not, some differences were observed in sleep quality components.
