Abstract

Aim: To determine the eficacy and possible complications of autologous serum application in patients with dry eye. Methods: 27 patients, nine with Sjögren's syndrome, were included in the study. In addition to their previous medications, patients were administered drops which were prepared by diluting their own serum to 20% with saline. Symptoms, tear characteristics and ocular surface parameters were evaluated. Results: Statistically significant improvements in symptoms and ocular surface parameters were observed in 40% of the patients at the 15th day and in 85% of the patients at the 30th day. Tear characteristics did not show any difference throughout the study. Although cultures revealed contamination in three patients, no clinically significant infection or any other complication was encountered. Conclusion: Autologous serum applications can be an efficient and safe adjunct treatment for dry eye patients who do not show improvement with other medications.
