Abstract

The first step in analysis of pleural effusions is to determine whether the effusion is transudate or exudate. We investiga-ted the aid of the Light's criteria and the pleural/serum cholinesterase. Sixty-nine cases were included in this study. Total protein, LDH and cholinesterase in serum and pleural effusion were examined. Twenty-one cases had transudative and forty-eight cases had exudative effusion according to Light's criteria. Pleural effusion cholinesterase level was detected to be 141.38 ± 76.62 IU/L in transudates and 154.41 ± 103.32 IU/L in exutades. The differences between these groups were not statistically significant (p> 0.05). Pleural effusion/serum cholinesterase ratio was detected to be 0.66 ± 0.41 in transudates and 1.05 ± 0.85 in exudates. These groups were not showed a statistically considerable difference (p> 0.05). In conclusion; cholinesterase levels in pleural effusions and pleural/serum cholinesterase rates do not help to differentiate between transuda and exudate.
