Abstract

As evaluating a lung cancer case, right staging is very important for treatment and prognosis. Computerized tomography (CT) and mediastinoscopy which is using more often recently, both have a very important place for staging. In our study, we investigate prospectively the value of CT and mediastinoscopy, for mediastinal lymph node staging of 100 bronchial carcinoma patients, between the dates of January 1997-December 2000. Ninetythree (93%) were male and 7 (7%) were female and ages were ranging from 30 to 73 (median 56). The sensitivity, specificity and accurancy rate results of our study are 62%, 77% and 60% for CT, and 79%, 94% and 97% for mediastinoscopy. As a result, CT is not only insufficient alone for mediastinal lymph node staging, but also a good tool that can decrease the number of unnecessary mediastinoscopies.
