Abstract

The examination of intraoperative frozen section is a very important method in determination of the extend of procedure which will be performed by the surgeon. We aimed with this study to compare the frozen section indications and frozen section results with definitive histopathologic diagnosis based on postoperative paraphine. During the period of 1996-2001 frozen section examination has been applied to 374 case at our clinic. One-hundred and eight of 374 (28.8%) are female, 266 (71.1%) are male and average age is 49 (1-79) years. The frozen indications were the intraoperative lung mass diagnosis (241 case, 64.4%), determination of N2 through mediastinoscopy (57 case, 15.3%), solitary pulmonary nodule (37 case, 9.8%), mediastinal masses (23 case, 6.2%), pleural thickness (16 case, 4.2%). When frozen section results and definitive histopathologic diagnosis based on postoperative paraphine compared, pos-toperative pathology of 6 cases in which frozen was evaluated as bening, has been reported as malign. Negative error rate is 2.7%, positive error rate is 0.7% (1 case). intraoperative frozen section extends the operation period. However it directs the surgical procedure so it shortens the hospitalization period by avoiding the patient from a second anesthesical burden.
