Abstract

In the pathogenesis of asthma, the role of imbalance between free oxygen radicals secreted from inflammatory cells that cause tissue injury and antioxidative defense systems has been studied for a long time. The aim of the present study was to evaluate imbalance between oxidative and antioxidative systems. The study included 45 patients with asthma treated in our hospital due to acute attack between October 1996-May 1997. We analyzed malonyl dialdehyde (MDA) the main degradation product of lipid peroxidation, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and Superoxide dismutase (SOD) that two of the antioxidants in patients with asthma and compared them with the controls. Asthma severity of the patients were divided into two groups such as severe and mild/moderate according to the criteria of European Respiratory Society (ERS): Serum GSH-Px and SOD levels were found significantly lower and MDA level was significantly higher in all asthma patients when compared to controls. Serum GSH-Px and SOD levels were found significantly lower when compared to controls, whereas MDA levels were significantly higher in patients with severe asthma. GSH-Px level was significantly lower, SOD and MDA levels were insignificantly higher in patients with mild-moderate asthma than the controls. In conclusion, one of the factors involving in asthma pathogenesis could be increased oxidant secretion and decreased antioxidant levels which could be related to the severity of asthma.
