Abstract

in this study, we aimed that pulmonary involvement investigated via pulmonary function tests (PFTs) and high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) in patients with chronic hepatitis C infection (HCV). Thirty-four patients with chronic HCV infection without diagnosis of any lung disease and 10 healthy cases enrolled to the study. It was performed PFT and HRCT in all cases. And we investigated correlation between pulmonary involvement and liver pathology in patients with chronic HCV infection. On spirometric measurements, a reduction lower than 80% of the predicted value in vital capacity (VC) in 9 of the patients, in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) in 8 patients, in forced expiratory flow 25-75 (FEF25-75) in 15 patients was detected. Carbon monoxide diffusing capacity (DLCO) was found reduced in 26 patients (76.5%). There was no significant difference between controls and patients with HCV infection in PFTs. Findings of interstitial pulmonary involvement were detected in the HRCT of 16 patients. It was detected that significant difference between control and patients with HCV infection in findings of HRCT (chi-square= 4.7, p= 0.03). Knodell histological activity index (KHAI) of 28 patients on whom liver biopsy were applied was 9.0 ± 4.7 (2-16). HRCT findings, spirometric values and DLCO were not affected by KHAI in patients with HCV infection. In these patients, all the parameters were observed to be related with age. As a conclusion, we suggest that chronic hepatitis C infection may cause pulmonary interstitial involvement without evident respiratory symptoms.
