Abstract

Forty stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients (20 emphysema, 20 chronic bronchitis) and 30 healthy individuals as the control group were included in the study in order to determinate the nutritional status of stable COPD patients and the impacts of nutrition on pulmonary functional parameters. Pulmonary function tests, arterial blood gas analysis were performed and dyspnea score was determined. Anthropometric measurements, bioetectrical impedance and biochemical analysis were performed to assess the nutritional status. Body mass indexes (BMI) of the patients with emphysema were lower than those of the patients with chronic bronchitis. There was a significant positive correlation between BMI and FEV1/FVC ratios of the emphysema group. FEV1/ FVC ratios of the group with low BMI were lower when compared to the patients with normal BMI. There was no correlation between arterial blood gas analysis, diffusion capacity and BMI. Fat free mass (FFM) measurements of the patients with emphysema and chronic bronchitis were lower than those of the control group. Albumin, prealbumin and total protein levels of the COPD group were significantly lower when compared to the control group. BMI of the emphysema group was found to be lower when compared to the chronic bronchitis group. Lower BMI of the COPD group and the positive correlation between BMI and FEV1/FVC ratio point out that nutritional status affects the pulmonary functions.
