Abstract

We aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of Chlamydia pneumoniae, the association between serological evidence and atopy and pulmonary function tests in chronic stable asthmatic patients. We analysed 40 patients with chronic stabile asthma individuals and 30 healthy individuals as control. Pulmonary function tests and skin prick tests were carried out in all subjects. C. pneumoniae specific IgG, IgM and IgA in serum were measured by using microimmunofluorescence (MIF) method. Chlamydia specific IgG seropositivity was 55% and 63.3% in patients with chronic stabile asthmatic and healthy individuals respectively (p> 0.05). Specific IgA was found to be 62.5% in asthma patients while it was 16.7% in control group (p< 0.001). Specific IgM antibodies reactive with C. pneumoniae was 15% in patients with stabile asthma while there was no specific IgM in control subjects (p< 0.05). When the patients were analysed as atopic and nonatopic subgroups, no relations were found between pulmonary function tests and presence of specific IgG, IgM and IgA seropositivity. As a conclusion, there was a relation between chronic stabile asthma and IgA, IgM antibodies reactive to C. pneumoniae while there was not between reactive antibodies and atopy and pulmonary function tests.
