Abstract

Since the soil including asbestos is in use, many asbestos-related disorders especially mesothelioma has been occurred in our region. The asbestos soil is stili being used in whitewashing although its use has markedly diminished in the recent years. in our study we aimed to investigate the knowledge of asbestos using families and the reasons of their usage. For this purpose we applied a questionnaire including 8 questions to 218 members of 78 families. One point two over hund-red of cases were aware that the soil used for white washing included asbestos and these cases were found to be using asbestos for 34 years. The reason of the inhabitants using asbestos-containing soil was that it was cheaper and more use-ful material for their houses. Also 26.6% of cases were found to recommend other people to use the soil including asbestos. The most important result was that 79.4% of the cases were not aware of harmfulness of asbestos to health. As a result, the main cause of continuing to use the soil including asbestos was found to be unawareness of its danger. Studies about this subject can be a great factor to prevent asbestos use.
