Abstract

We interviewed with 80 tuberculous (TB) patients and 53 non-TB patients diagnosed in our clinics in 2002 with respect to their knowledge about the disease by a questionnaire. The mean age of patients with TB was 39.7 years and 51.5 years with non-TB patients. Patients were classified according to their educational status, family history of TB, past history of TB or any other illness and TB categories, if present. We found that 37.6% of all patients did not ever heard about TB and 7.5% of patients about any vernacular name of the disease. In addition, contagiousness and its pathways, med¬ical treatment and necessity of prevention were not known by 12.8%, 80.5%, 69.9% and 4.5% of all patients, respectively. Also the patients who had a family history of TB and educated patients had more information about disease than the other patients. As a result; we observed that TB patients did not have enough knowledge about the disease. We suggest that public education should has priority since public education is very important in combating TB.
