Abstract

In this study, comparison of behavioral education (BE) and/or nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) between stages of mild, medium and heavy nicotine dependence according to Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence have been aimed. Six hundred and ten patients applied between October 1999-April 2002 have been acknowledged and evaluated by questionnaire. One-year follow-up results and demographic variables of patients who recruited to treatment (n= 435) (three visits, telephone counseling) were analyzed by statistical analysis. Two patients died, 124 patients (non-con-tactable) were considered to be smoking. 375 case (66.8%) were given NRT and BE; only BE (Fagerstrom < 6, no use of NRT for medical, economic, other reasons) was recommended to 186 subjects (33.2%). 56 (10%) patients were in mild, 320 (57%) patients in medium, and 185 patients in heavy nicotine dependence groups. There was significant statistical difference between groups with regards to distribution of treatment groups. The groups were similar with regards to onset age and demographic variables except gender, and there was statistical difference between groups for packet year and NRT dosage. On the other hand, the smoking cessation rates were similar between nicotine dependence groups in two treatment groups. As a result, in smoking cessation, NRT and behavioral education are both efficient regardless of nicotine dependence stage.
