Abstract

In the design of the structure foundation investigation and evaluation of the geotechnical properties of the foundation soils in detail is very important. In the phase of the usage of the building in which that these researches have not been carried out properly, some problems which can not be solved (differential settlement, fracturing in structural elements, cracking and collapsing etc.) are faced. Because of these potential problems geotechnical properties of foundation soils of the Cold-Storage Warehouse of Sivas City which is planned to be build on soft alluvial soils which have low bearing capacity were studied and evaluated from the point of construction applications. To achieve the objectives of the study, examination wells were bored, disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected and index and strenght properties were determined in the laboratory. In addition, to determine undrained cohesion of the soils kanatlı kesici tests were carried out in examination wells. According to test results the foundation soil is sandy silty brown coloured soft inorganic clay in CL group and its allowable bearing capacity is 0.61$ kg/ cm^2$ . The net foundation pressure is 1.00 $ kg/ cm^2$ , so the foundation soil can not bear this pressure without collapsing. For this reason, the foundation soil requires an improvement process. Taking into consideration of the plate loading test results and vertical stress distribution analyses it was concluded that the foundation soil can be improved by applying 1.50 m thick, compacted rock and stabilized material fill. In addition this fill application will considerably reduce frost heave damages in the building foundation arising from the foundation soil which is suseptible frost heave.
