Abstract

AIM: There are scientific evidence of functional interface between the gastrointestinal system (GIS) and respiratory system diseases in recent studies excess prevalence of asthma has been shown among patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The aim of our study was to investigate the prevalence of IBS in asthmatic patients. METHODS: One hundred and one patients with bronchial asthma (69 women, 32 men; mean age: 33.9±7.5 years), 81 patients with non-asthmatic pulmonary diseases (51 women, 30 men; mean age: 35.2±12.6) and 88 healthy subjects (58 women, 30 men; mean age: 34.6±7.5) were included in the study. The diagnosis of IBS was made according to Rome II criteria. RESULTS: There were 40 (39.6%), 22 (26.4%) and 20 (22.7%) IBS subjects in bronchial asthma group, non-asthmatic pulmonary diseases group and healthy group, respectively. The IBS prevalence in bronchial asthma group was significantly higher than healthy subjects (p=0.018). Although the IBS prevalence was higher in bronchial asthma group than the non-asthmatic pulmonary diseases group, it didn’t reach a statistically significance (p=0.086). There was no difference between non-asthmatic pulmonary diseases group and healthy controls with respect to IBS prevalence (p=0.59). For the bronchial asthma patients with duration of five years or more the IBS prevalence (22/38; 57.9%) was significantly higher than the patients with asthma with duration of less than five years (18/63; 28.5%) (p=0.006). CONCLUSION: We found that the prevalence of IBS was more common in the bronchial asthmatics than in healthy controls. The IBS prevalence increases in patients with five or more years of bronchial asthma duration. Our finding supports the speculation that asthma and IBS may share common pathophysiological process.
