Abstract

Congenital bronchial atresia is a rare disease. Hilar mass lesions and increased aeration are seen in peripheral lung segments on chest x-ray. Fifty years old male patient was admitted to our clinic with dyspnea. He was a seed cleaning worker who had an asthma history for 15 years. In physical examination there was volume loss in right hemithorax. The respiratory sounds were diminished in both lung, but markedly in right. The expirium was prolonged and forcefull. In chest x-ray there was irregular opacity in right lower zone. Thoracic computed tomography (CT) revealed bullous formations and a 4.5x3 cm sized solid mass in right lung?s lower lobe which is characteristic for bronchial atresia. In bronchoscopy we found narrowed segmental orifice in right middle and lower lobe. The patient was diagnosed as congenital bronchial atresia. As it can be radiologically confused with mass lesions, we present this case with the review of literature.Thoracic CT reveals mass lesion accompanied by peripheral increase in aeration and bulla formation typically in bronchial atresia. So diagnosis can be done by clinical, bronchoscopic and thoracic CT findings without invasive procedures.
