Abstract

Introduction: Lung cancer is very common in both men and women worldwide. In this study, we evaluated retrospectively the distribution of lung cancer in a Training Hospital at Istanbul with respect to sex and age using the patients’ data in the last five years of our hospital archive. Materials and Methods: Files of patients admitted to our hospital with the diagnosis of lung cancer between 2006-2011 were evaluated. Data about the age and sex of the patients were analysed. Chi square was used for comparison of frequencies and Spearman test was used for assessment of correlations. One way ANOVA was used for the comparison of mean values and p<0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. Results: In this 5-year period, the total number of patients diagnosed with lung cancer was 9504, of which 86.3% were male. Mean age for the total group was 61.4±11.4 years, while this was 61.7±11.1 years for men and 59.4±13.4 years for women. With the exception of the years 2007 and 2008, when the mean age diagnosed as lung cancer did not differ significantly, the mean age of patients in the rest of the years analaysed were found to be decreasing from one year to the next with statistical significance (p<0.05).The percentage of the female patients from 2006 to 2011 were 12.3%, 12.3%, 12.9%, 14.6% and 16.8%, respectively, showing that percentage of females increasing significantly (p=0.0001) as the years progressed. The difference in the female patient percentage between the years of the lowest and highest incidence (2006 and 2010, respectively) was 4.5% (p=0.0001). Conclusion: Among the lung cancer patients diagnosed in our hospital, percentage of females increases gradually whereas the age of diagnosis decreases. These results should be supported by further studies in other centers to find out whether they reflect the picture throughout the country.
