Abstract

Parapneumonic effusion is fluid accumulation in the pleural space secondary to pulmonary infections. The most frequent causes of parapneumonic effusion are bacterial and viral pneumonias. As a result of complications in this fluid and collection of pus in the pleural space, empyema develops . Microorganisms that cause empyema most frequently in adults and children are; Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. Clinical appearance depends on the causative microorganism, amount of pus in the pleural space and general status of the patient. The diagnosis is made radiologically. If pleural fluid is not drained, the empyema goes on to the chronic phase in three stages physiopathologically. Determining parapneumonic fluids earlier and preventing empyema by proper antibiotherapy will decrease the necessity for more invasive treatments. In the treatment of empyema, surgical methods such as video thoracoscopic deloculation/decortication or decortication with thoracotomy are applied
