Abstract

Aim: The role of obesity on insulin resistance and inflamation in Type 2 diabetic patients was investigated. Method: A total number of 50 Type-2 diabetes mellitus patients (mean age 57.1+8.9 yrs) consisting of 21 male and 29 female were studied in two groups according to their body mass indexes. Thirtythree non obese healthy subjects (mean age 38.8±10.2 yrs) consisting of 15 male and 18 female were included in the study as the control group. Routine biochemical tests, insulin, ferritin and CRP levels were determined in automatic analyzers. Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA) method was used to calculate the insulin resistance. Mann Whitney-U test and Tukey's test, Kruskal Wallis and One-Way Annova test were used for statistical evaluations. Results: Insulin, CRP and HOMA-IR showed a significant difference between the groups (p<0.05) whereas, no difference was shown in ferritin levels between the groups (p>0.05). It was also determined that rate of hypertension was higher in obese diabetic patients. Conclusion: It was shown that, HOMA-IR, insulin and CRP levels were tending to elevate when the components of metabolic syndrome were increased.
