Abstract

The rates and reasons of pots, lost during a fishing season in Iskenderun Bay. The passive fishing gears, lost in the sea such as gears pot, set net continue to catch fish, cause mortality of aquatic organisms without human control even after they were lost. There is no certain information on how many fishing gears are lost and what is the rate of mortality caused by lost fishing gears in the world. In this study, the amount of lost pots for catching during fishing season, were investigated in İskenderun Bay, one of the most important fishing area of the northwest Mediterranean. For this reason, the questionnaire was applied to eleven fishing ports. The results of this research showed that there are three important fishing ground; total 4741 pots were used in this area and 402 of pots (%8.47) were lost in one fishing season. One of the reasons for his lost pots was conflict among fisherman followed by bad weather conditions and abandonment.
