Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the incidence of maxillary sinus hypoplasia and its coexistence with uncinate process and other anomalies in patients with sinonasal symptoms. Patients and Methods: Computed tomography scans at coronal 3-5 mm intervals of 200 patients with sinonasal symptoms were evaluated. Of these, seven patients (3.5%) (4 females, 3 males; mean age 53.14 years; range 20-84 years) exhibited maxillary sinus hypoplasia. The lesions were assessed using the Bolger classification. Results: Of seven patients, three patients (1.5%) had bilateral and four (2%) had unilateral lesions. According to the Bolger classification, six cases were type I and one case was type II. Uncinate process anomalies (aplasia, hypoplasia, and lateral deviation, respectively) were detected in three patients (42.8%). Conclusion: Uncinate process anomalies were the most common anomaly in patients with maxillary sinus hypoplasia. Possibility of orbital complications dictates a more careful dissection in patients with maxillary sinus hypoplasia, who are candidates of endoscopic sinus surgery.
