Abstract

Objectives: To determine the efficacy of three-point puncture and aspiration in the management of peritonsillar abscesses and to evaluate microbiologic data thereof. Patients and Methods: This prospective study included 34 patients (16 females, 18 males; mean age 34.7 years; range 14-59 years) with peritonsillar abscess. Following three-point puncture and aspiration, the patients were treated with clindamycin phosphate. Samples of pus aspirated from all cases were examined for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Results: All patients recovered as a result of treatment. None of the patients required aspiration: in 26 samples, cultures were positive for Streptococcus pyogenes (n=18, 52.9%), nonhemolytic Streptococci (n=2), S. pneumoniae (n=1), coagulase-positive meticilline-sensitive S. aureus (n=4), and coagulase-negative meticilline-sensitive S. aureus (n=1). Conclusion: This study showed the role of anaerobic bacteria in peritonsillar abscesses and the efficacy of three-point puncture and aspiration followed by antibiotic treatment.

Örneklerin 18'inde (%52.9) A grubu beta-hemolitik streptokok (Streptococcus pyogenes), ikisinde non-hemolitik streptokok, birinde S. pneumoniae, dördünde koagülaz pozitif metisiline hassas S. aureus ve birinde koagülaz negatif metisiline hassas S. aureus üredi.
