Abstract

The maintenance of the cold chain depends on the knowledge, behaviour and atitude of people working in this field as well as modern Instruments and facilities. in this cross-sectional study evaluating the knovledge, atitude and behaviour of the private pharmacists in Mersin. The study involves 147 pharmacies, selected by systematic stratified sampling. 51.7% of the pharmacies were at the city centre. 52.4% of the pharmacists were voomen. The mean age of the whole group was 38.9 ±10.7 years old. in 90.5% of the pharmacies, at least one apprentice was employed. 63.3% of the pharmacists knew that the temperature required forstoring vaccines in the refrigerator was 2-8°C. There was no thermometer in 98.0% ofthe refrigerators; no içe batteries in 53.1%; and no vaccine transfer box in 47.3%. None of the pharmacies had personnel especially responsible of the cold chain and a temperature-monitoring chart for the refrigerators. Younger pharmacists tended to keep the vaccines in the refrigerator longer than a month. in 64.6% of the pharmacies, the vaccines were demolishedfor various reasons and the rate of this demolishment increased in pharmacies with chief apprentices edııcated for less than 8 years. it has been determined that there exist significant mistakes and shortcomings in cold chain equipments and applications in the pharmacies in Mersin. Such applications should be standardized through intensive in-service training and control on this subject.
